  • The South Korean Love Industry

With one of the lowest birth rates in the world, South Korea is in danger of disappearing by the end of the millennium. If the situation stays as it is, South Koreans are predicted to become extinct by 2750. Because of the rapidly aging population, elderly prostitutes known as "Bacchus ladies" have cornered a number of public parks as their working areas. Meanwhile, South Korean kids are living with their families well into their 20s—as a result, an entire economy of sex motels has sprung up to give kids a place to fool around outside the watchful eyes of their parents. We sent Matt Shea to investigate this generational crisis, which led him to Seoul's red-light district, a pre-wedding photo shoot on the set of a Korean soap opera, and an erotic sculpture park on South Korea's "honeymoon ...

South Korea has become one of the biggest economic success stories since the 1960s, making it hard to believe that at one point, North Korea was more advanced than South Korea. South Korea moved to a regime that was based on property rights and market incentives, and has seen rapid growth in exports. It rode the economic rise of Japan, stepping in as a lower-wage partner for Japan in manufacturing. South Korea has also placed an emphasis on primary education, discipline, and hard work. It supported land reform, which helped foster democracy, and the government promoted a policy of "export discipline" in which it supported businesses, but only so long as they exported to the rest of the world. A labourer for the North Korean army, Park was in charge of supplying food for North Korean soldiers. Park spoke of widespread hunger in his homeland. SOUNDBITE: "As far as I know, a North Korean dies of hunger every two or three days on average. I heard South Korea was far better off, so I decided to defect here before I die of hunger." SUPERCAPTION: Park Chol-Ho, defector Recent defectors have spoken of severe food shortages and scores of North Koreans dying of starvation in the seclusive Communist country. Last summer North Korea was hit by large floods which devastated food supplies. Park is the 27th North Korean defector to cross the border this year -- last year, 45 North Koreans defected to the South. While the South Korean authorities were quick to maximise the propaganda value of the latest defector, the army is anxious to discover how a lone man managed to penetrate one of the world's most heavily fortified stretches of land. North Korean Air Force Strength 2017 - Show Off Brutality Weapons, South Korea Should Fear Given North Korea's experience with heavy U.S. bombardments in the Korean War, its aim has been mainly to defend North Korean airspace. The heavy reliance on fighter aircraft, Surface-to-air missile and Anti-aircraft warfare reflects this. However, since nearly all of North Korea's aircraft inventory consists of aging and obsolete Soviet and Chinese aircraft, the primary goal of the air force may have changed in the last years to providing ground support for the land forces and threatening South Korean population centers and military targets with a massive air attack. In this way, North Korea could try to maintain military parity with South Korea by using its air force as a deterrent, much like its ballistic missiles, instead of trying to maintain a technological parity in aircraft types for individual air-to-air roles. This seems to be confirmed by the recent redeployment of 120 mostly obsolete fighters, bombers and transport aircraft closer to the demilitarized zone, even though 440 modern aircraft are also based near the DMZ. Keeping in mind the production, storage and use of a vast chemical, biological and possibly nuclear weapons inventory by North Korea, this change in doctrine is even more significant.
